Heading to Ranger Boats Today

November 30, 2009 by AnglersChannel

We are heading out to Ranger Boats today for 2010 Product Knowledge Tour to see some of the new 2010 models as well as get some up to date info on what is going on at one of the worlds largest boat builders. Needless to say, Ranger has been effected like so many others from the current economic downturn, however, we get the feeling things are on the up and up, as dealers and anglers seem more upbeat about 2010 compared to this past year when we all knew we were in for a battle. Hopefully will be able to post some video throughout our visit and will blog when able………….hope everyone had a great thanksgiving!

Lay Lake Report

November 22, 2009 by AnglersChannel

We thought we’d begin tracking whats going on at Lay Lake in AL-the site of the 2010 Bass Masters Classic-here is the most recent report we recieved:

Date: November 20, 2009

Lake: Lay Lake

Water temp: 57

Clarity: 6 inches

Launching at Beeswax on beautiful Lay Lake, conditions did not appear to be favorable with the water temperature having dropped 5 degrees in the last week. Normally, this is a turn-off for large mouth bass. Not wanting to forsake them completely, I decided to start in Beeswax creek, swimming a Davis Paca swimjig in green pumpkin with a hint of chartreuse tipped with a Zoom twin tail in green pumpkin. The 2 islands in Beeswax are surrounded by dollar grass and some millfoil. The flood waters have washed out most of the normal Lay Lake grass, it is nowhere to be found. After only 30 minutes of fishing, my client boated a nice 3 1/2 lb largemouth, followed by a larger fish breaking his line at the boat.

Knowing that there was still largemouth bite available, I felt comfortable moving out on the river into the current and heading towards the dam. I had called 1-800-525-3711, which is the Alabama Power generation schedule, and found out that they were going to be running 3 turbins all day. My first stop was near the steam plant where, with the help of my 36 volt Minn Kota trolling motor, I was able to maintain position and fish slow enough to start catching bass on a Fat Daddy casting jig, 3/8 oz in brown and green with a green Super Chunk, Jr as a trailer. In this location, we boated 3 solid keeper Spotted bass. A pattern was established that the bass was holding in the mouths of the cuts and creeks where the current washed by.

After establishing this pattern, we ran the cuts and the mouths of creeks from the steam plant to Buzzard Island upriver and caught over 35 quality Spotted bass. Wanting to cover all my options, we threw a crankbait and a Jackall MC60MR in chartreuse Fire Tiger and a TN70 vibrating bait in TN shad, both caught fish on the same pattern as the jig.

The fishing line we were using was Seaguar InvizX in 15 lb test. The properties of this line appear to be the best line available for cold water fishing with very low memory and good sensitivity for fishing cold weather and cold water conditions.

With the unpredictable Alabama weather, fishing this time of the year brings great days or challenging days on the lakes. If you are interested in fishing with me and learning how to read the weather conditions and adjust accordingly, please contact me at 205-396-5556 or e-mail me at fishendoug.@hotmail.com and you can check out tips and techniques at my link onf http://www.ninjatacklebox.com/

With Christmas approaching, a guided fishing trip would be a perfect gift for both the young and old anglers that are trying to improve skills and techniques. I am booking trips for December – February and have many openings to choose from at this time.

Thank you,

Doug Nichles

National Guard FLW College Series Notes

November 10, 2009 by AnglersChannel

After spending the better part of yesterday in Davidson (great town BTW) watching the Northern Regional Championship Weigh-in, don’t underestimate the amount of effort FLW is putting into this. They Had a huge set up in the middle of town that drew thousands of visitors over the weekend and then another good crowd yesterday for the final weigh-in. These kids from Hampton Sydney, NC State, and Va Tech were great and had the enthusiam to show for it. As you can see from the video’s we posted this am below, they were pumped and literally speachless as they got up on stage………FLW had the entire VS network camera crew there as well as live internet feeds for the weigh-in too. I would say from a presentation standpoint, its everything a Tour or Series Event has if not more! There are now over 400 Clubs (there were 70 at the beginning of the year) registered with FLW heading into next year, and that means more competition than ever for these guys. they don’t pay for anything-FLW and the National Guard pay all costs, no entry fee’s, plus hand out some serious checks at each event. The winning team that emerges from KNoxville in March will qualify for the FLW Cup on Lanier in August-now thats pretty big! Watch the preview we did with Charlie Evans and you’ll get a much better idea and feel for how they are structuring this entire league. Hope you enjoy some of the highlights below and we’ll look fwd to covering more of the College Series in 2010!! BTW-the weights were smaller than what most of you are used to, but not by much…………they are getting better every week!

November 9, 2009 by AnglersChannel

We are heading up to Norman this afternoon to see what team wins the 3 day Northern Series on the FLW College Series Tour. There are 5 teams out on the water today, and will have some interivews and analysis from the winning team as well as AC Pro Staffer Dale Lucky who has been up there all weekend. Can anybody get a 15 Lb bag on Norman right now?

Top 5 from North Shelby School-Special Olympics on Norman

November 8, 2009 by AnglersChannel

102 boats showed up yesterday to compete in what is becomming one of the premier charity tournaments of the year on lake Norman. Many anglers said they caught most of their fish down the lake on Jigs. Weights were about where they’ve been the past few months-not good. Some teams had a good am bite and some didn’t catch their first fish until after 12 noon. Congrats to all and here are your top 5:

1. Bobby Gill and Scott Stallings 5 fish 13.27 $2500
2. Doug and Jennifer Easton 5 fish 11.84 $1500
3. Shane Lineberger and Hank Cherry 5 fish 11.78 $1000
4. Tim and Tommy Chapman 5 fish 11.26 $950
5. Patrick Houdge and Thomas Anderson 5 fish 11.18 $900

The payouts ran through 20th place and it took a little over 9 lbs to cut a check…………Great event and a Tournament you need to mark down to fish in 2010 if you missed 2009!
